William "Bill" G. Abplanalp
Audit Manager, Virginia Tech
Bill Abplanalp has been the Audit Manager at Virginia Tech since October 2014. He attended Virginia Tech where he acquired his Bachelor’s degree in Management Science and Information Technology and also received his MBA. At Virginia Tech, Bill is responsible for ensuring completion of the annual audit plan, providing leadership and day-to-day guidance to internal audit staff, tracking the progress of the annual audit plan, and ensuring a timely and effective follow-up process for the outstanding issues identified by internal audit.
Bill has over 12 years of experience in the audit and IT security field. He started his career in the Big Four working for KPMG, where he conducted IT audit and advisory services. After he received his MBA, and spent time in Northern Virginia working at a large consulting firm, he returned to the New River Valley and began working at Radford University. He started as Radford’s IT Auditor where he developed the initial IT audit function at the university. Several years later he took on a new challenge as the university’s Information Security Officer. He spent over three years in this role prior to returning to his alma mater to work in University Internal Audit.
He has his CompTIA Security+ certification, and is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Association of College and University Auditors. Bill is currently working towards completing his CIA certification.
