Brian Daniels, CIA, CISA, GCFA
Associate Director of Internal Audit, Virginia Tech
Brian has been the Associate Director of Internal Audit at Virginia Tech since 2011. He is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and a Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA). Brian attended Virginia Tech, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Information Technology with a concentration in Decision Support Systems. He later acquired his MBA from James Madison University. At Virginia Tech, he has developed the IT risk assessment model and implemented a structured long-range IT audit plan. He is responsible for assisting in the development and execution of annual and long-range audit plans for university programs and resources. He provides strategic direction to the operations of the IT and university audit teams. Brian has also developed the IT forensics program that is vital in support of reviews into allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse.
Brian is a resource to the university community and is often called upon to provide guidance or to advise on matters of business process or information security. Brian strives to ensure that he and the department at-large both add value to the university in a manner consistent with good business and operational practices and in compliance with applicable standards, policies, regulations, and laws. Prior to working at Virginia Tech, Brian worked at the University of Virginia. He held a variety of roles in Internal Audit at UVA, ultimately serving as the Assistant Director of IT Audit. His responsibilities while at UVA included performance and management of various engagements and special projects. Prior to his work at UVA, Brian worked at the Auditor of Public Accounts for the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Information Security Auditor.
Brian is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA), and ISACA, and is active with the College and University Auditors of Virginia (CUAV) as well as the Virginia Alliance for Secure Computing and Networking (VASCAN). Brian has presented at various state and national level conferences and seminars and has taught classes for the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. He has actively volunteered with ACUA since 2014 and is currently serving on the membership committee. Brian has also participated as a team member for Quality Assessment Reviews at peer institutions.
